The following considerations are important:
Shells built for heavyweight/midweight crews can be designed to be rigged for lighter crews. A lightweight crew in a heavyweight boat will experience some difficulty "setting up" (balancing) the shell. Proper rigging will minimize this problem.

A shell built for a lightweight crew will not accommodate midweight/heavyweight crews since the boat's waterline will be too high to rig the boat properly.

If you have a non-typical crew in a particular season it may be advisable to rent a shell for that season, rather than make a long term commitment to a shell size that is not consistent with the typical needs of your rowing program.

If your water conditions tend to be rough, a larger shell will help to minimize the amount of water taken in the boat. In general, unless your budget permits a full fleet of all shell sizes, a larger shell will be more versatile addition to your fleet.

Dirigo shells can be supplied with any style rigger:

The two most common styles are:

  • Standard Dirigo
  • Euro
  • Douglas
  • Empacher
  • Carbon
  • Standard Dirigo
  • Euro

Characteristics common to standard Dirigo and Euro riggers:

  • Both styles are equally stiff.
  • Shell price is the same for both.
  • Backstay is the same design for both standard Dirigo and Euro.
  • Concept II oarlock supplied on both.

Why use Dirigo riggers?

This style is by far the most common rigger in use today and is, therefore, the most familiar to coaches and rowers.

Why use Euro riggers?

  • Euro riggers are easier to rig.
  • Pitching is accomplished with Concept II oarlock inserts.
  • Spread changes do not require repitching.
  • Outboard pitch is accomplished by bending rigger with a special tool, but no parts changes are required.
  • Rigger weight is 1/2# less than standard Dirigo.

When ordering your new Dirigo you will need to specify the following rigger dimensions:

  • Minimum/maximum seat to oarlock height.
  • Minimum/maximum spread ( of shell to oarlock pin (pin to pin for sculling))
  • Outboard (lateral) pitch (1 degree is most common)
  • Port or Starboard stroke: Dirigo shells may be rigged for either Port or Starboard stroke with one set of riggers, however, it is probable that some "shimming" will be required when moving riggers to a different seat.
